Anarchie comes with lots of documentation, including full text documentation (also available on our Web site at <http://www.stairways.com/>), loads of simple tips (try reading just one each time you launch Anarchie), and a complete AppleGuide. Anarchie is fairly simple to use, but youﾕll get a lot more out of it if you spend a small amount of time making use of these resources.
Finding a Macintosh file by name
Choose MacSearchﾉ from the File menu.
Type in part of the name of the file you are after.
Click Find.
It displays a list of matches.
Double-click the file you want, and it will be downloaded from a local mirror.
If the search fails, try another search string, or try Archie (below).
If all searches fail, you are probably behind a firewall, talk to your network admin. MacSearch searches will work through SOCKS firewalls, and usually connects to TCP port 1787.
If the download fails, try another match, or change your Internet Config settings for Info-Mac and UMich mirrors.
Finding a file by name
Choose Archieﾉ from the File menu.
Select a server.
Type in part of the name of the file you are after.
Click Find.
It displays a list of matches.
Double-click the file you want, and it will be downloaded.
If the search fails, try another server or search string.
If all searches fail, you are probably behind a firewall, talk to your network admin. Archie searches will not work through firewalls.
If the download fails, try another server.
Browsing an FTP site
Choose FTPﾉ from the FTP menu.
Type in the name of the server (eg ftp.stairways.com)
Type in the path name (eg /stairways/)
Click List
If you get an error, choose Retry, or Edit Retry.
It displays a list of files and folder.
Double-click any of them to display further lists, or to fetch a file. You can also drag files or folders to your desktop to download them.
Saving a bookmark
Select a folder or file in the listing.
Choose Save Bookmarkﾉ from the File menu.
Now if you Open that, it will display the listing, or fetch the file.
Copying a bookmark
Select one or more folders or files in the listing.
Choose Copy (or option-Copy) from the Edit menu.
[This is useful for those people who post asking ﾒwhere is program blah?ﾓ - just feed ﾒblahﾓ into Anarchieﾕs Archie or MacSearch window, and copy the results and paste them into your reply]
Surfing
Choose List Bookmarks.
Pick any server there, double-click and you're off!
